What is Blue Sky High?
It’s a state of mind! Or maybe it’s a state of life… I was more than inspired by the great 1966 surf documentary, “The Endless Summer,” which follows two young surfers as they traverse the globe in search of the perfect wave, timing their travel between hemispheres to ensure that wherever they are, it’s always summer!
Right on, fellas! I love summer. I love the person I become in the summer. There’s no denying the effects of seasonality on one’s mood, and summer is a real upper – I become happier, healthier and more active. But that’s really just about having a more positive state of mind, isn’t it? And if that’s the case, then I should be able to control my state of mind. So, starting now, I’m going to be my summer self. All the time.
I moved with my wife, Lea, from Iowa to Northern California in July 2007. We also lived in New York after graduation, but I always knew we’d be in California. Why? Well, it’s a lot easier to be your summer self in Sunny California, for one thing! And the place is suitable to our common interests in nature and healthy, simple living. (We try to make it simple, anyway). And in May 2009, my brother, Jared, joined us! I couldn’t ask for a better pair of fellow fun-seekers.
In fact, we stay pretty busy with all that fun-seeking. And we wish we could share it with you. So, after inspiration #2 – Iowa Girl Eats (hilarious, charming, and delectable) – I got the Wise idea to start a blog! If we can’t share in the fun together, this has to be the next best thing! I hope you have fun, too!

Fun stuff
Wine hunting – Always on the search for great $8-15 bottles (with an occasional splurge). We spend a lot of time in our neighborhood wine shops and across the vast wine making regions of this great state.
Biking – We try to get in one long bike ride around the SF Bay Area every weekend
Surfing – I’m getting better. Really…I am.
Hiking – The air in CA smells sweet, and with thousands of miles of trails available, there’s plenty of space to drink-it-in.
Cooking – JP’s obsession for food can, at times, be rather annoying. But it’s a great way to bring people together and appreciate Mother Nature’s bounty!
